Sixty-six steps, one for each year of Lincoln’s life, leading to the entrance of the temple of granite in the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Site (historical site of the birth of Abraham Lincoln) was formed in 1959. The Abraham Lincoln National Park was established in 1916. Protected in the temple is a hut of one room.

Near the turn of the century, a group of famous patrons, including Mark Twain and William Jennings Bryan, raised funds to buy the farm where Lincoln was born and the cabin, which had been part of a touring exhibition and the memorial built to house it. Although not the cabin where Lincoln was born, she represents the humble origins of the 16th U.S. President.

Abraham Lincoln was born in 1809 in a cabin near the Sinking Spring on the family farm. The spring water security, but the red earth and stony ground of the farm were not very fertile. The cabin Lincoln was probably a typical house of that time, approximately 5.5 x 5 feet hit the floor, a window, a door, a small fireplace and a fragile roof. Oiled paper, animal skins or old quilt should be hung on the window to keep the bugs and freezing wind outside.
