Despite massive opposition from the European Parliament to resume trade in ivory from elephants, the European Commission appears increasingly likely to support the revocation of a block world in 1989 at the 15th Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Fauna and Flora in Endangered (CITES), which will be held from 13 to 25 March in Doha.
On February 10, Parliament adopted a resolution with very strong language (http://www.presseportal.ch/go2/franzweber1) calling for the EU, which will negotiate as a single bloc in CITES, not to support the reopening of ivory trade and to respect the agreement to a moratorium on the ivory, which lasted nine years and concluded 14th meeting of CITES in the Hague in 2007. The Commission and member states of the EU are now very likely to ignore Parliament and support movements of Tanzania and Zambia to resume the ivory trade.
“This is really the last shot for elephants in Africa. The devastating fighter of the 80s, which was earlier controlled by CITES, is now so prevalent that African elephants are almost extinct in some countries where they lived before,” said Bourama Niagate, director of parks and nature reserves in Mali and co-chairman of the African Elephant Coalition, comprised of 23 governments.
“The European Union should demonstrate once again the leadership demonstrated in 2007 when the German presidency, brokered a deal eleven o’clock on a moratorium on the ivory, nine years’ duration, in recent negotiations of CITES. It is incomprehensible that the the European Union is thinking of reopening the ivory market. After years of quiet, is now giving the green light for the hunters kill the elephants, “said Vera Weber, director of the Fondation Franz Weber. “We urge the Commission to urgently change its position before it is too late for African elephants,” he added.
