The second section of the High Line is also under construction and scheduled to open in spring 2011. The final section of the project awaits the purchase of land by the City to see the day … Meanwhile, the project is small around the world and inspire other landscaping remarkable. Back on this success story in New York, to dream a little history …
It is a successful public space project on the whole line, which we are discussing today. One of those rare examples where the pugnacity of citizens met with the designers vision and received good support from the political world and the entertainment industry: it is only in the U.S. we’ve seen! However, initially, the picture was bleak. The railroad abandoned the old High Line was built in 1930 was abandoned, leaving room for wild herbs, plants, shrubs and trees robust. In 1999, Mayor Rudy Giuliani ended by vote to its demolition. Meanwhile, two residents, Robert Hammond and Joshua David, seize the potential of such an air walk in a sector undergoing industrial restructuring and gentrification. They decide to form a committee called Friends of the High Line (FHL) to preserve this structure to the idea of making a public space planting. Bringing together residents, merchants, professionals, politicians, community and cultural groups, they offer a complete project of rehabilitation of the railway, on the example of the Promenade in Paris Green. The idea, widely publicized and supported by many celebrities, allows an international competition to emerge and designers selected to complete the project term, with a total cost of operation estimated at 170 million dollars … Today, that same committee which oversees FHL raise private funds for the maintenance of a good part of the walk, the Department of Parks & Recreation in New York taking care of the rest.
